BALLARAT MP Catherine King has been given the health portfolio, one of the most senior positions on the opposition front bench.
Opposition leader Bill Shorten announced his new shadow ministry this afternoon, saying it represented generational change.
"There is more Gen X in this shadow line-up than has existed before in Australian politics," he said.
Ms King said health was a "great portfolio" and a "terrific challenge to have".
"It's one of the key portfolios in government and in opposition. I'm very honoured to take on that position. I'm really proud of Labor's record in health," she said.
She believed her background as a social worker and developing health policy would assist her in the portfolio.
"It's a policy area that I both love and have worked in for a long time," she said.
Ms King said she was concerned about what was going to happen in health under the new government.
"My job will be to make sure people are aware of what Labor did in government and make sure that the worst excesses of the Abbott government are held in check," she said.
