Fire crews were called to a small grass fire in Mt Helen overnight, which destroyed part of a fence.
The fire was brought under control quickly, but the real puzzle was how the fire started.
After an investigation, it was determined that a possum had somehow caused overhead power lines to spark and ignite the grass fire.
The call originally came in as a malfunctioning transformer.
Ballarat City Fire Brigade responded to a number of calls over the weekend for burn-offs which were getting out of control.
Firefighters say the majority of the burn offs were not registered.

Ballarat police had every available car patrolling Ballarat and keeping an eye on the Avoca Races at the weekend in a crackdown on speed and alcohol-related driving offences.
Highway Patrol members were busy conducting breath tests at the races while there were plenty of patrols in and around Ballarat itself.
Police say crowds were generally well behaved at the event.
