BALLARAT rowers put in several impressive performances at the Bendigo Regatta on the weekend, with members of the Ballarat City Rowing Club claiming multiple victories against a high-quality field at Lake Weeroona.
In total the crew competed across seven separate categories, finishing with two wins and a host of placings.
James Simpson and Liam Fitzpatrick combined with sculling newcomers Samuel Hayden and Benjamin Martin to win their quad scull heat by three boat lengths over the rest of the field, before being edged out by an experienced Hawthorn crew in the final.
City then met their quad scull counterpart Hawthorn again in the male four event final, with Gus Coltman combining with Simpson, Fitzpatrick and Hayden to lead from start to finish and win by a total of two lengths.
Marion Peters finished second in the individual scull, while Coltman won a thriller in the B grade final.
The club also competed in the open mixed eight event, with Steph Edwards, Peters, Sarah Maher, Madeliene Ross, Martin, Hayden, Coltman, Fitzpatrick and coxswain Claudia Griffin combining for a gutsy second placing in the last race of the day.
After a consistent winter of pre-season training and coaching, Ballarat City members have set their sights on representation at the state and national championships.
Ballarat City is anticipating a strong showing on the water this season, with regattas scheduled for Dimboola, Hamilton and Nagambie prior to the Christmas break.
