HISTORIC family portraits hidden behind a framed certificate may have a connection to a Ballarat family.
Ballarat resident Rosalie Elliott said she bought the photos for their frames at a Ballarat auction a few decades ago.
“It was a furniture and effects auction at a house auction – they don’t have those types of auctions any more,” Ms Elliott said. “It was at the start of Ryan Street, right under the Caledonian Bridge.”
One frame held certificates for playing pianoforte, awarded to Joseph Hope by the London College of Music from what appears to be 1935.
“The photos could be more than 100 years old,” Ms Elliott said.
After purchasing them, Ms Elliott used the frames and stored the certificates and photos in a cupboard.
Having moved houses recently, she came across the photos again.
“I don’t know the people – but it should be interesting for people who are related.
“I would imagine they’d be some relation to the Hope family, seeing as the certificates were for a Hope.
