BEN Melham is the new rider for Puissance de Lune in the WS Cox Plate on Saturday.
Melham replaces Glen Boss, who this afternoon failed in an appeal to have a suspension shortened to allow him to ride in the group 1 $3m event.
Boss was suspended after pleading guilty to a careless riding charge in the Caulfield Cup.
Puissance de Lune's Ballarat trainer Darren Weir knows Melham better than most.
Melham, who is originally from Ballarat, did his apprenticeship under the guidance of Weir.
Melham this morning travelled to Warrnambool, where Puissance de Lune is based, to ride the imported grey in track in readiness for a call-up.
This is not the first time Melham has had a late call-up for a high profile ride.
He took the reins on Black Caviar in the 2010 group 1 Patinack Classic at Flemington and of course duly won.
