THE big issues faced by farmers, including depression and suicide, will be addressed at a farming forum in Beaufort this weekend.
Hosted by DLP senator John Madigan and independent senator Nick Xenophon, the forum hopes to bring the government and community together.
Organiser Peter Sporton said he decided to hold the event after learning of the issues highlighted by his friend Keith Slorach, who ran into financial trouble and had to give his guns away to prevent suicide.
“There’s a lot of farmers doing it tough at the moment, not knowing how to get out of that situation,” Mr Sporton said.
“They’re passionate about the land and their animals but they get themselves into financial troubles.”
Entry to the forum at the Beaufort Community Bank Complex is a gold coin donation, with a free barbecue available and the opportunity to ask questions.
Also speaking will be Pyrenees Shire Councillor Robert Vance, Victorian Farming Federation vice-president David Jochinke and beyondblue ambassador Tony McManus.
