Sellars, 27, dropped more than six kilograms in the week leading up to the championships in an effort to cut the necessary weight to make the under-80 kilogram division, and subsequently placed third in the quality, 10-strong line-up.
Sellars won the under-90 kilogram division at the IFBB Victorian titles the week prior, and has pushed his body to the absolute limit this year in search of success. He began an extreme dieting phase 12 weeks ago which involved ingesting 2.5 kilograms of meat and two kilograms of broccoli a day, and training six days a week.
In the lead up to the titles, he didn’t take in any water for three-and-a-half days in an effort to maximise his muscle definition. “It’s a huge sacrifice preparing for these titles, because there’s no money in it and all you’re chasing is a trophy,” Sellars said. “If you’re not conditioned well heading into the event, then the pressure you put on your muscles when flexing on stage can make you faint.”
Sellars opened his own gym, Ben’s Army, in March this year, and captured his first title of the year at the 2013 FitX championships.
