A joint program by The Courier and Bunnings, ‘How does your garden grow?’, encourages pupils to be innovative in their gardens by using recycled products.
The winning school will receive up to $3000 of goods of their choice from Bunnings and four to six Bunnings staff to help construct what they wish to make with their purchase.
The Courier marketing manager Serena Eldridge said children were encouraged to bring items from home to grow something in, such as yoghurt pots, tins or juice bottles.
“A Bunnings team goes to each school and gives a lesson on how to grow veggie seeds and will leave school with a starter kit for children to use in their classroom,” Ms Eldridge said.
“We want children to learn that food can be grown in almost any small space using recycled goods and for them to actually use what they grow.”
Linton Primary School is already signed up to the program, and principal Ian Forrester said the school had an ongoing program that had pupils outside in the garden.
“They often do activities including seed raising and planting. We have a little orchard as well,” Mr Forrester said.
“A lot of kids have gardens at home but this is a good program to get them to start thinking more about the garden.”
Mr Forrester said the competition was a great idea, but they were more interested in the educational side of the program.
“For us it’s just about enjoying learning,” he said.
‘How does your garden grow?’ is open to schools participating in The Courier’s Newspapers in Education program. Entries can be submitted by The Courier’s iPhone or Android up until Monday, October 21.
NEXT WEEK: Every family has an ‘odd one’ – you know what we mean? A little bit strange, cheeky or embarassing. We want you to send in your odd relative, and the most ‘fun’ photo will win a double pass to see the new movie Bad Grandpa as well as a Bad Grandpa poster.
WHAT TO DO: Using The Courier’s iPhone or Android app, select the assignment button under the report button, and press ‘Appy Hour: Embarassing relatives’ and send in your photo with your contact details. Your picture might be published in next Friday’s edition of The Courier.
