A TIN sign found in a Cypress trees cleared from Learmonth Road was an old advertisement for Ballarat real estate firm Doepel, Lilley and Taylor.
The company’s current directors, Philip Cunningham, Robert Cunningham and Bob Whitcher believe the sign was with the tree as it grew.
“We reckon when it was put up there it was only a small tree and by the time we found it, it was about 20 foot up in the air,” Mr Cunningham said
Items of historical significance for Doepel, Lilley & Taylor have been dusted off and brought out of the archives for the company’s 125th anniversary.
Among the memories of the company’s larger dealings was the Ercildoune Homestead clearing sale around 1963.
The long-serving clearing sale chair for the auctioneer to stand on has been in the company for at least 50 years, though Bob isn’t so sure of its structural integrity after all these years.
The company will be celebrating its milestone at Craig’s Royal Hotel on November 11.
