KATRIN Garfoot has strengthened her hold on the Tour of the Goldfields and National Road Series with a powerful display in a team time trial at Burrumbeet today
Garfoot’s Victorian Institute of Sports outfit had a clear-cut victory in the 20km second stage.
They clocked 28 minutes, 6.9 seconds - 48 seconds quicker than second-placed Pensar SPM Racing, featuring reigning NRS champion Ruth Corset.
Garfoot began the three-day Ballarat tour yesterday just three points ahead of Corset in the race for the NRS title.
She extended this margin to five with a win in the opening stage – a 42km criterium in Victoria Park.
This gap is now out to eight.
Garfoot leads the tour by two seconds from VIS teammate Chloe McConville, who finished second in the first stage.
Another VIS rider Jessica Mundy is 11 seconds behind in third, while Corset is 50 seconds back in fourth.
Corset faces a massive task to bridge this gap over the remaining two road stages – at Burrumbeet this afternoon and Dunnstown tomorrow.
