CENTRAL Gippsland has claimed the John Fitzgerald Cup for 13/under boys for the third year in a row.
Australian number 780 Jack Clements and teammate Justin Hough have represented Central Gippsland since its first victory, joining James Mercer and Ben Grumley in the grand final face-off against Barwon.
The quartet won 45 games and five of six rubbers against Barwon, which won 19 games and one set in doubles and singles matches.
Tennis Victoria tournaments manager Andrew Reynolds said the depth of talent was obvious.
“It was an exceptional weekend of talent and great attitude. We now have a wealth of opportunity for selection of the state team,” Reynolds said.
Due to dismal weather, the Cup was transferred from Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre to the undercover facility at Tennis Ballarat in Sebastopol.
Tennis Victoria player development co-ordinator Emily Rea attended the final to select players for the state team that will represent Victoria in the upcoming National Foundation Cup.
“We are looking for players with a good attitude and competitiveness,” Rea said.
“They will be prepared to fight, be a good team player and compete strongly throughout the competition.”
