Yesterday’s final at Central Wendouree was an all-Smeaton affair, with Toose and Mizzeni overcoming other club members Rhonda Armstrong and Robyn Shaw 14 shots to 13 in the 15-end match.
Armstrong and Shaw dominated the match early on, blowing out to a 13-6 lead before the half-way mark, before Toose and Mizzeni found form in the final five ends to come steamrolling home.
The match came down to the final end, with Toose and Mizzeni picking up two shots on the last bowl to secure a remarkable come-from-behind victory.
“It was a tough match becauseR we knew each other really well and how each other bowled,” Mizzeni said.
“We were playing well early but were well down so we were fairly lucky to get the win in the end.
“It’s great for our club – which is only small – because we both beat teams from Midlands in the semi-finals and Lyn Taylor won the over 60s singles title, which made the seventh year in a row that someone from Smeaton has won it.”
The pair will now represent the BDBD at the regional titles next Thursday, where they will compete against representatives from the Central Highlands and the Bendigo leagues.
