Andrew Baker's letter in The Courier (August 6) draws attention to the need for state legislation to ensure similar protections for CFA firefighters and volunteers, as those now provided federally since the Greens successfully introduced legislation last year.
Firefighters put their health at risk to protect us, so it is only fair that we provide protection for them.
Victorian Greens MP Colleen Hartland has given notice of a bill in the Victorian Parliament to change the state laws and is seeking support from all parties.
The Greens' bill will ensure firefighters are compensated for work-related cancers. We trust that all MPs will work together across party lines to see the legislation through the Victorian Parliament.
The Greens are keen to work with all parties: Labor, Liberal or National, city or country, to ensure firefighters get the protection they deserve.
Colleen Hartland's draft bill gives Victoria's firefighters and their families the same rights that commonwealth-employed firefighters gained from Adam Bandt's legislation.
It also extends those rights to volunteer firefighters and to training exercises.
