For Josie Sangster, it all started five years ago when she noticed a derelict milk bar in Creswick Road. As an artist, Josie saw the building’s potential as a gallery and a place to sell gifts, art and shoes. And, hence, Studio G.A.S. was born.
Today, Josie’s eclectic taste in fashion and giftware has become so popular that she hasn’t painted in years.
In between greeting customers – often by name – and bouncing around the store, Josie stood still long enough to share her style tips.
How can we dress well at any age?
Dress appropriately according to your age, your figure, the occasion and the weather. There’s nothing worse than evening wear during the day and strapless dresses in sub-arctic conditions. Also, apply another KISS principle – Keep It Stylish, Sweetie. In fact, my 85-year-old regular is the grooviest. She buys the funkiest, really way-out pieces.
What are the biggest trends in fashion this winter?
Colour has taken centre stage this year, with bright colours available in jackets, pants and knits. Fur has also been very popular, whether in jackets, vests or accessories.
What are your top style tips?
Dare to be different. Try a different style or look that may even be out of your comfort zone – you may just hit on something that really suits you. And don’t be frightened of colour. You can add a splash of colour with a scarf or a handbag or more boldly with a bright or patterned coat. Finish the look with a great, different pair of boots.
What are your style tips for short and tall women?
Mmm... for short women, wear outfits that are more streamline and fitted, if you can. Too much happening sideways may give you a spherical look (trust me, I know). For tall women, I’m the wrong person to ask.
What do you look for when shopping for clothes?
A point of difference. I find some mainstream labels all do a version of the same thing and everyone ends up looking the same. I look for items that offer an individual style and I am never frightened of colour and funky fabrics.
