Myer Ambassador Lauren Phillips said savvy accessory choices allowed ladies – and men – to stay with the latest trends about the track.

Bold graphic prints and soft, pastel fabrics are the two, extremely opposite trends Ms Phillips said had emerged this spring racing carnival.

Ms Phillips said closed toe shoes – leather rather than suede – prevented damp grass areas from spoiling footwear, and opt for straw-based feature headwear rather than feathers that would likely go limp.

She said a tailored jacket was a must for travelling to and from the track and against cold winds blowing up the home straight.

The Melbourne model and television presenter was unveiled yesterday as guest judge for the Myer Fashions on the Field at Dowling Forest on Sunday and she said she expected a strong stylish field.

“I went to Bendigo before the Melbourne Cup and Cranbourne and then the Melbourne Cup Carnival and it was definitely so impressive how into things people get ... country races have similar fashions to the Melbourne Cup Carnival,” Ms Phillips said.

“I like that there’s a local lady of the day.

“The local lady showcases local milliners and usually local designers, which is good to see.”

Gentlemen, Ms Phillips cautions against mixing too many colours for an outfit.

She suggests using shades of the same colour and paying attention to detail – a waistcoat, flower of the day, and maybe a bold colour in an accessory.
