It is the first time the club has recruited from outside the Ballarat region, with Frost replacing Sharon Ruyg after the team put together a solid season this year.
Frost, who began his coaching career in Warrnambool in the late 1970s and 1980s, has spent most of his coaching days in the Geelong Hockey Association and has an impressive record across all areas of coaching and player development, from juniors right through to senior men’s and women’s competitions.
“Phil comes with significant coaching, coach development, player development, talent identification and playing experience,” WestVic Hockey president Mick Poulton said.
“He will provide challenges and drive to our Vic. League One program.”
Frost has spent time as a state selector and coach.
Under Frost, the WestVic players have already begun their pre-season training, building up a fitness base through running sessions two nights a week.
The captain of the Australian over-50 team plans to put WestVic through some rigorous fitness testing after Christmas, including the beep test and various agility tests before hitting the pitch for skills training in late January.
“I can’t wait to get back into coaching and I think there is a fair bit of talent to work with in this team,” Frost said at the squads fitness session on Wednesday night.
“There is a lot of untapped talent in this squad and what I like about the Ballarat teams is that they have a great set of ideals and a thirst to succeed that comes from playing the elite teams from Melbourne.”
