Boxing Day a hectic time for racing community

BALLARAT racing stables will get plenty of opportunities to continue the Christmas cheer with ample opportunities at Boxing Day meetings across the state.

Mandy Shillito and Robert Smerdon will be hoping to unwrap a new star in the opening event at Caulfield – the Joe Brown Plate for 2yo fillies, 1000m.

Each has first-starters engaged.

COUNTRY CUPS

DARREN Weir continues his pursuit of country cups on two fronts on Boxing Day.

CHORD (60kg) is top weight in the Nhill Cup, 1650m, and one of a full book of rides of SA jockey Wayne Kerford at the non-TAB meeting.

Then there is the consistent XAVIER in the Penshurst Cup, 2000m.

Xavier is knocking on the door after a fifth in the Avoca Cup, second in the Mortlake Cup, third in the Dunkeld Cup and fourth in the Traralgon Cup in his latest four starts.

BURRUMBEET CUP

THE countdown to the Scott Petroleum Burrumbeet Cup on New Year’s Day is well and truly on.

Nominations close on Friday, with weights declared on the same day.

Fields for the seven-event program will be finalised on Monday.

In a busy week at the track, there will also be jump-outs at Burrumbeet on Friday, January 3.
