Almost 4000 people – 500 down on last year’s sunny event – braved the rain for the family fun day yesterday.
Burrumbeet Park and Windemere Racing Club secretary Paul Brumby said despite the weather it was a fantastic day.
“It was wet and the crowd was down a bit because of the weather, which was unfortunate,” he said. “It started raining two hours before the first race so it did deter some people.”
He said the crowd behaviour was exemplary.
“Everyone was well behaved and there were hundreds of happy kids who enjoyed the free activities,” he said.
Entertainment away from the track included an animal farm, jumping castle, segway rides and a rock climbing wall.
“The kids’ Dash for Cash was conducted in pouring rain but that didn’t stop them. Dozens of kids ran down the straight in the rain, which was great,” Mr Brumby said.
Dozens of people entered Fashions on the Field, he said. “Given it was a pretty casual country race day, there was some really good fashions.”
The $15,000 cup was won by eight-and-a-half lengths by the Darren Weir-trained Heisman, which was the favourite.
The victory was the icing on the cake for Heisman jockey Harry Coffey – who has cystic fibrosis – after he won a treble.
“Sixteen owners of Heisman all put in $50 each and raised $800 for cystic fibrosis. Coffey rode on three of seven winners, it was a highlight for him and a highlight for the club,” Mr Brumby said.
