The 17-year-old had a good chance to test her game against world number 72 Julia Goerges, despite falling 6-2 6-0.
Hives received a wildcard for the event qualifiers.

Sydney International is a key lead-in tournament to the Australian Open and main draw play starts on Sunday.
The International boasts one of the strongest qualifying fields of any WTA event in the world.
This year the main draw entry cut-off is world no.33 Daniela Hantuchova.
Ballarat Open Gold AMT women's singles runner-up Viktorija Rajicic, aged 19, is also a wildcard in the Sydney International.
