To kick off the 10-day festival, Gary Ekkel directed soloists and a 10-part Newman College Choir for the event’s opening recital at St Patrick’s Cathedral.
Hundreds flocked into the pews about 8pm and fanned themselves with programs, while director Sergio de Pieri addressed the masses.
The event will host 23 recitals across 13 venues in Ballarat and the region, with demonstrations on heritage church organs, visits to historic and tourist sites and social functions and dinners.
The festival will finish on January 19, with another recital at St Patrick’s Cathedral at 8pm.
In 2012, more than 6000 people watched the event.
