I DISCOVERED a couple of workmen on my front lawn on Saturday morning (January 18), who informed me that they were there to run the NBN cable and fit a box on the front of my home.

I asked what that entailed and was informed that they ran a 200mm deep trench from the pit on the nature strip to the house, fitted a box on the wall, and tidied up after. "Fine", I replied, "go ahead".
I checked some time later and found that the 200mm trench was in fact in places 50mm, and in others 100mm.
They said they would deepen it to 200mm. When they started to backfill I checked again and discovered that they had not dug the trench any deeper.
A somewhat heated discussion ensued and it was only when I insisted work cease until a supervisor arrived that they then agreed to dig to the agreed 200mm, which they did.
Interestingly, the trench was 200mm from the pit to the boundary and then deteriorated.
My point is, this is another poorly conceived idea which is being poorly executed and I would warn people to monitor the installation or they might find, in a few years time when they are planting that beautiful magnolia that grandma gave them for Christmas, that the shovel goes straight through their NBN cable, which is only 50mm below the surface.
I wonder who will pay to rectify?
