The 35-year-old was last night officially appointed to take over the role from Shane Skontra, who led the competition to its past two interleague triumphs.
Middleton, who is coach of Bungaree, was assistant to Skontra in both wins and now has the task of building his own coaching panel ahead of the Highlanders' clash with Loddon Valley in late May.
Middleton is a past Central Highlands coach of the year and is preparing for his fifth season in charge of the Demons.
"Not many coaches get to coach a side that we are putting together in the coming months. I'm pretty humbled by being able to lead those boys into the interleague match," Middleton, who played a number of years under Skontra at Waubra, said.
The Highlanders, which flogged Ovens and King by 109 points last year, will play host to the Loddon Valley in 2014.
