Sovereign Hill volunteer Bill Llewellyn, being carried aloft by his colleagues, has been awarded The Museums Australia Award For Excellence (Volunteer).
FOR the past two decades, Bill Llewellyn has been entertaining Sovereign Hill’s visitors with his well-honed woodworking skills, knowledge of the region and his charisma.
But over time, he says the woodworking has become more difficult because every time he starts to chisel away at a piece of timber, somebody asks him a question.
Mr Llewellyn, however, is always happy to answer them.
“I still get a kick out of it,” he said, after he was given the highest award a museum volunteer can be given last Thursday night. “I get lots of satisfaction out of it all.”
In 22 years volunteering at the outdoor museum, Mr Llewellyn has filled many roles including 12 years as a guide co-ordinator and many more in costume entertaining tourists along the main street of Sovereign Hill.
Mr Llewellyn was awarded the Museums Australia Award for Excellence (Volunteer) at a special presentation at the State Library of Victoria.
“It was quite thrilling actually, I feel quite pleased that I’ve been able rate high enough to be named,” he said.
