Morning sports catch up: February 11

BALLARAT Pride will be carrying out their finishing touches ahead of the Victorian Netball League season-opener tomorrow.

Federation University Pride kick off their season with clashes against Boroondara Genesis at the competition's regular home, the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville.

Ballarat's 19/under girls get the campaign rolling from 7pm, followed by the championship team at 8.20pm and the division one side at 9.40pm.

Pride will play two home games in Ballarat this season - at the Wendouree Sports and Events Centre - on May 10 and June 1.

Meanwhile, Sochi Winter Olympics tragics can cheer an Australian athlete with a strong connection to Ballarat tonight.

Cross country skier and former Ballarat university student Phillip Bellingham will make his Olympic debut in the freestyle men's sprint, with qualification to begin from 9.25pm our time.

Also today, the Oceania Mixed Team Championships of badminton continue in Ballarat.

The tournament, which began yesterday, is being held at Ken Kay Stadium.

Another thing to keep an eye out for this week is the release of important information about the structure of the new National Premier Leagues competition in Victoria.

Ballarat Red Devils were successful in gaining a licence for the league last week, with Football Federation Victoria set to outline details of its make-up in the coming days.
