Ballarat Beat Rockabilly Festival kicks of at the Mining Exchange

THE Ballarat Beat Rockabilly Festival got into the swing of things last night.

The four-day festival kicked off at the Mining Exchange for a pre-party with festival director Arthur Matsakos saying he expected a big crowd through the doors.

“Rockabilly is a bit of a faster tempo version of rock and roll and it is just non-stop dancing and fun,” he said.

International acts started arriving in Ballarat this week which are expected to be a big drawcard.

There will be a street festival on Lydiard Street tomorrow for the first time, giving the festival a “New Orleans-style street party” feel.

Mr Matsakos said ticket sales had gone up from last year and  entry was free to all of the outdoor entertainment.

He said fashion and burlesque shows would also be highlights.

Ballarat Regional Tourism event co-ordinator Robbie Burns said it had been a big year for Ballarat events, bringing a lot of people in to town.
