Landmark livestock manager Xavier Shanahan described the numbers from the 41st Landmark sale as “acceptable” given the very dry conditions being experienced across the eastern seaboard of the country.
Feed lotters and some butchers were among the main buyers, with buying support also from Landmark branches at Leongatha, Benalla, Millicent, and Kyneton.
“After seeing the results over the last few weeks everything landed where we expected it,” Mr Shanahan said. “Steer weaners were equal or a shade dearer and heifers were generally $30-$50 a head dearer, with many making $1.70kg. It was a positive outcome with sellers.
“The grown steers were probably a shade cheaper than the week before, probably five to 10 cents a kilo cheaper.
“We are thankful we didn’t have the sale three weeks earlier or during one of those hot weeks because we could have possibly taken $100 less on every head.”
Top price for the day was for a pen of 11 angus steers at $940 per head for the Springs of Buninyong. Also in the top range was a pen of 12 angus steers at $920 for M & J Mizzeni of Kooroocheang, near Smeaton.
The best price for steer weaners was Fortland of Ballanee, Ballan, with 17 angus steers weighing an average of 411 kg at $770 per head.
The best presented pen award for steer weaners went to VG and SM Richards of Blampied with 23 angus steers at an average 393kg which made $730 per head.
In the heifer section from Carngham Station Angus were 30 heifers 18 months old Landfall Blood making $690 a head, and 35 making $645.
