The Ballarat branch secretary of the Embroiderers Guild of Victoria spent two years creating a collection of sewing accessories using the technique of Naxos embroidery from the Greek Island of Naxos.
The intricate works are among 7000 embroideries on display at St Patrick’s Hall this weekend for the guild’s ‘Paved with Pearls’ exhibition.
Traditional, contemporary and creative uses of embroidery technique, patchwork and quilting are all on display at the event, which also marks part of the branch’s 30th birthday celebrations.
Ms Hawkes said some of the pieces were spectacular.
A special display of embroideries more than 30 years old, many of which are family heirlooms, are also being shown.
“It’s about demonstrating the skills of embroidery and to arouse interest in embroidery,” Ms Hawkes said.
Formed in 1984, the branch now has 150 members including 14 juniors, with seven meetings a month.
Several founding members will also join the weekend’s celebrations by exhibiting their works.
The exhibition opened last night and runs daily until Monday.
