The six fires, to be controlled in grassland and parkland reserves on Saturday and Sunday, are expected to send thick clouds of smoke drifting over city suburbs.

DEPI spokesman Dan White says he understands the smoke may be distressing for residents who recently battled fires in the area this summer, but the burn-offs are a crucial step in protecting communities.

"Victoria's weather is always changing and we need to take the opportunity to reduce fuel loads whenever the conditions make it safe to do so,” he said.

The planned burns will take place near Derrimut, in the city's west, and near the northern suburbs of Epping, Craigieburn, Somerton and Mickleham.

Several grass fires threatened homes in those areas last month when hot and windy conditions fanned flames and sent them dangerously close to housing estates.

Weather bureau senior forecaster Terry Ryan said the planned burn-offs will take place near areas that received the heaviest overnight showers, at between 5 and 8mm of rain.

Temperatures are expected to only reach a high of 19 degrees over the weekend too, he said.

"There will be southerly winds today, a bit of cloud coming in, maybe the odd shower," he said.

"It's getting closer to what you'd expect in March."

Depending on the weather, firefighters may also complete several planned burns in the Dandenong Ranges.
