MT CLEAR 184 v BROWN HILL 0-5, day one at Eastern Oval
Mt Clear was all out in 69 overs.
Oooo, Mt Clear was in major trouble early. Brown Hill pinned the Mounties at 5-26 and looking very, very stressed.
Bulls' quick Matt McMahon and his skipper Jason Knowles inflicted the collapse. McMahon bowled Mountie Matthew Drain and was on a hatrick ball after nabbing key Mountie Matt Goonan next.
This was all about Matt McMahon's lethal, well-placed pace. McMahon finished with 6-46 and seven maidens in 21 overs. He had 3-11 in his first 10 overs. He largely worked tandem with Shane Harwood, who was a rare wicket-less for the innings. Bulls' captain Jason Knowles chipped away to claim 2-33. Bull Dean Ferris picked up two late wickets, including the prime scalp of Hayden Cartledge, lbw.
Dan Hopkinson and Hayden Cartledge revived the Mountie order.
The experienced Hopkinson (a premiership captain with North Ballarat a decade ago) stepped in at number six and gradually turned momentum in his 56 runs (5 fours).
Hopkinson's seventh wicket partnership with Cartledge was only short, but Cartledge picked up exactly where Hopkinson left off.
Cartledge chalked up a well-balance 55 runs and formed a pivotal 56-run partnership with Steve Nicholson (26 runs) for the ninth wicket.
The Bulls seemingly stumped Cartledge on the first ball he faced but - luckily for the Mountie - the umpire declared otherwise.
Bull Chris Banwell's spectacular flying catch near the boundary to oust the dangerous Hopkinson ust on tea.
Brown Hill batting openers Jack James and Matt Hyden have put five runs on the board - 180 runs to go.
The Mounties opened bowling with skipper Nathan Yates, teaming with paceman Ash Gunn and bringing in Hopkinson to mix it up late in the eight overs the Bulls faced.
