An ambulance spokesperson said paramedics were called to the Bridge Mall at 2.25pm after a female sustained a stab wound.
The teenager was in a stable condition when she was transported to the Ballarat Base Hospital.
Police said the victim was slashed in the hand during an altercation with another teenage girl in Time Lane at 2.20pm.
Two teenage girls were arrested in the mall almost immediately after and were assisting police with their inquiries last night.
It is believed all three girls were known to each other, with police yet to determine how the fight broke out.
The incident occurred in daylight trading hours in one of Ballarat’s busiest shopping precincts.
Police cordoned off the lane, between the Bridge Mall and Little Bridge Street bus stop, and were approaching shoppers and traders in the busy central business district retail precinct as they sought witnesses to the stabbing yesterday.
Earlier this month, a 19-year-old woman was charged with multiple offences after another woman was slashed across the face with a utility knife outside the Central Square shopping centre.
