O'Donnell, 28, will slot straight into the Ballarat McDonalds Red Devils side as a centre-back after impressing in the club's training sessions and practice matches.
His presence will see the Red Devils field a much stronger side than the one that was due to face the Bentleigh Greens in the washed out season opener earlier this month.
Red Devils coach James Robinson is pleased about the state of his team heading into this weekend's match against the Goulburn Valley Suns.
"Nearly everyone's available and we're constantly improving," Robinson said.
The team will nonetheless be without gun midfield recruit Dane Milovanovic, who is currently serving a one-match suspension.
