Burrumbeet has a 123-run lead with seven wickets in hand for the second innings with play to resume tomorrow in Ballarat Cricket Association’s district division one final.
It seems like a simple assumption, that Burrumbeet is well in control against Lucas at Dunnstown. Then you look to how play unfolded on day one.
The defending champion captured Burrumbeet’s last seven wickets of the first innings for a reasonably cheap 71 runs.
Lucas put 134 runs on in reply, still 50 short of the Beet’s first effort, but as Lucas captain Kayne Wilson told The Courier post stumps – partnerships were the key to a strong innings
and while Lucas lacked that to start with, his players would be determined to not let it happen again.
Burrumbeet has time this weekend to linger at the crease.
The burden is on Lucas to restrict the Beet and give themselves time to hunt them down.
Lucas’ Russell Brookes captured a lean 4-44 off 23 overs in the first innings with Wilson and newly-crowned Bernie Davey medallist Dale Jeffrey nabbing three wickets apiece.
Burrumbeet will resume batting with the in-form Simon McCartin – who is averaging 44.1 runs in division one this season – in partnership with Dean Mathews.
Their captain Andre Prenc was pleased with the all-round team performance that got his team into this position.
Now Burrumbeet must work to put the game beyond Lucas’ reach and try to achieve elusive glory.
