First, the Ballarat javelin thrower must seal her selection for Glasgow in this weekend's Australian Athletic Championships in Melbourne.

Mitchell, locked in a duel with world championship silver medallist Kim Mickle this summer, has twice finished runner-up to Mickle on the domestic circuit with Commonwealth Games A-qualifying throws.

Her first, a personal best of 66.10 metres in Adelaide last month, launched her into third on the all-time Australian women's javelin throws.

Then Mickle unleashed an Australian record of 66.83m in Melbourne two weeks ago.

"I've still got a lot more distance to come - at least this season in Europe," Mitchell said.

"I'm looking for a good throw on Saturday (in the final). My main aim is to seal off selection."

Australian Athletics Championships start on Thursday at Melbourne's Lakeside Stadium.

Mitchell will be in action on Friday morning for a women's javelin qualifying round.

Ballarat has a strong contingent of athletes set to line up for the meet, which doubles as Commonwealth Games selection trials.
