A homicide squad detective on Thursday applied in a Melbourne court to interview Thomas James Hemming, who appeared in custody via a video link.
Detective Senior Constable Tony Hupfeld told Melbourne Magistrates Court that Mr Hemming, 21, was identified as a suspect for the criminal damage allegations when interviewed for an "unrelated matter" (the deaths of the couple).
Detective Hupfeld said in evidence Mr Hemming has been identified as a suspect in criminal damage by fire on February 19 this year, as well as April 18, 2012, and March 13, 2011.
Defence barrister Damian Sheales told the court his client did not oppose the application and that he would attend the interview with Mr Hemming.
A magistrate granted the application and advised Mr Hemming of his rights, which included that he did not have to answer any questions.
"Yes, ma'am," he responded when asked if he understood the process and "no, ma'am" he replied when asked if he had any questions.
Mr Hemming will be interviewed for not longer than two hours on Friday.
