Tim Hasted received the Rural Health Workforce Award for outstanding contribution to the promotion of rural health last Friday night.
The announcement was made at the National University Rural Health Conference, where he also received a cheque for $1000.
Mr Hasted is currently completing his final year of medicine at the University of Notre Dame's medical teaching hospital at St John of God Ballarat.
He has also finished a general practice placement at the Carn Brae clinic and, after graduating, will do his intern year at Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital.
Mr Hasted's candidacy for the award was based on his involvement in the university's rural health club rounds and organising rural high school visits to promote health careers to secondary school students.
He has also played a national role as the student representative on the John Flynn Placement Program, which provides rural and remote experiences for medical students.
"I have tried to focus on tangible improvements that make rural practice more attractive to medical students," Mr Hasted said.
