Would that we Australians, so relaxed and comfortable in our land of plenty and the fair go, had the heart to understand this.
Let's stop demonising and slandering those escaping places we cannot imagine, for in our easy-going way, we could never survive there.
Let's recognise there's no queue nor orderly manner in which people flee the chaos of abuse, torture, murder, war or abject poverty.
We too, given the circumstances, would do what we could to provide for our loved ones.
Politicians and citizens alike, we must all stop 'riling people up' and accept that 'people are actually coming to this country to provide for their families'.
Only then will our asylum seeker policies truly meet our international obligations and satisfy the moral commitments to which we profess.
