The body of a 49-year-old man was discovered by his elderly parents after a fire in the garage of their Ardrie Road house shortly before 5.30am on Friday.
It is understood the man has teenage children and had moved in with his parents about a year ago.
Collin Thomas, 32, of Fairfield, was charged with murder and arson in an out-of-sessions court hearing on Sunday morning.
A Boronia man, 41, is in custody assisting police with their inquiries.
Thomas has been remanded to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.
