In the wake of the stinging winless start to the season, with questions over the club’s recruiting and on-field leadership, there is a growing call for a fresh start in the key club posts.

President Stephen Kernahan will step down this year, with plans for this to happen even within the next fortnight, with businessman Mark LoGiudice, a joint vice-president, expected to take over, unless there is a sudden challenge.

Elliott, a successful stockbroker and businessman and currently drive-time host on 3AW, was part of a rival ticket in late 2006 that considered challenging then-president Graham Smorgon when the Blues were in financial strife. Elliott indicated at the time he was not interested in the presidency. Smorgon was replaced by the late Richard Pratt.

Asked on Monday whether he had any interest in joining the board and even becoming president, Elliott told Fairfax Media: ‘‘Right now I have no interest in doing it. But I will look at the next few weeks with interest. We’ll just see what happens.

‘‘There is so much being said after the horrific loss on Saturday. Look, I have obviously thought about it in the past. That was back in ‘06, we had a bit of a look at it. Now, like all Carlton supporters, I just want to see where the club is going and what decisions are made in the next couple of weeks.

‘‘My personal viewpoint, and this is something Carlton has tended to do in the past, is react very badly and in an exaggerated manner when things suddenly go bad. Right now is a time to just look at it and see what comes out of this. For example, we have three conceivably tough games in the next few weeks. I would like to see the coach and players respond to what happened in the past two weeks before making any decisions.’’

There has been speculation AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick, a dual Blues premiership captain and former club board member, could join the Blues should he step down from the AFL, but Magpies president Eddie McGuire has claimed Fitzpatrick will remain with the league for the next five years.

Elliott said he did not have a ‘‘great personal ambition’’ to join the board but the Blues needed to demonstrate a plan, otherwise it was a "whole new ball game".

‘‘I am not one of those guys that says I want to be on the board of a football club. I just want to see if there is a way for Carlton to get itself out of the, well, not the mist, but we have had a terrible start to the season ... to see if there is any plan to do that,’’ he said. ‘‘If there is no plan, it’s a whole new ball game. If there appeared to be no plan, then you will see all sorts of people coming up with plans.

‘‘There are all sorts of conversations going on in the background now. There are people talking and the Bruce Mathiesons are getting out and saying things and so forth.

‘‘I just want to see if any real plan emerges from the current board. They are in charge. They are the ones who are responsible for things now and making key decisions.

‘‘Unlike sometimes in the past when the club said, ‘Righto, let’s change everything because we have had a bad few weeks’, I want to see what emerges from the board in the next few weeks.’’

LoGiudice has the backing of club powerbroker and pokies king Bruce Mathieson. LoGiudice is also good friends with club great Steve Silvagni, raising the possibility Silvagni, Greater Western Sydney’s list manager, could rejoin the Blues in that crucial role. A possible impediment to Silvagni’s return is that his three boys, Jack, 16, Ben, 13, and Tom, 11, could be possible father-son selections. He is also contracted to the Giants until the end of 2016.

Chief executive Greg Swann, on a rolling year-to-year contract, is expected to also move on despite turning around what had been a dismal business.

LoGiudice has the backing ahead of joint deputy Ryan Trainor to replace Kernahan, with fellow director and Australia Post chief Ahmed Fahour not having the support to take control.

The Blues are clearly tired of Mathieson’s criticism and calls for administrative change, with Kernahan saying on Monday these comments were “slightly disappointing” considering Mathieson had been kept abreast of the club’s plans. “He’s an integral part of the football club, he’s a member and everyone is disgruntled with the past few week’s performances and we understand that,” Kernahan said.

“I’m going to do the June 14 function for our 150th [celebration] and we’ll have a new president [after that]. So from that point of view, I’m not sure what Bruce is talking about, because we speak with Bruce and we are close with Bruce. But he’s made his comments and that’s fair enough.”

The charismatic John Elliott was president from 1983 until the end of 2002, delivering the 1987 and 1995 premierships, before he was ousted by Ian Collins after the Blues finished bottom and slipped into their darkest era.

It is understood John Elliott has also been sounded out about a return to the board but that will not happen.

The Blues have 12 board members, an unwieldy number expected to be slashed by at least three this year as part of a major rebuild.
