What: Yacht Club DJs
When: Thursday, April 17 at 8.30pm
Where: Karova Lounge
THIS year has already seen local outfit Yacht Club DJs soar to new heights.
Last week, the mash-up duo released its first EP of original music. Entitled No. 1, the four-track offering features the vocal prowess of local musician Josh Haire on its lead single Undertow, as well as a collaboration with Fingertips.
The outfit's Gareth Harrison said an EP of originals had been in the works for a long time.
"It's something we have talked about, on and off, for years, but it never felt right," he said.
"We had some songs we felt matched up with the ethos of Yacht Club so we went with it." The EP was released not long after the release of the pair's fifth and latest mixtape Oddity Number 5 - a mixtape that brims with Yacht Club's fearless repertoire spanning 1960s blues, 1990s pop, Disney soundtracks, death metal and everything in between.
"Literally, we put a heap of songs into a program on our computer and pick out the tiny bits we want to use.
"It might be a guitar part or singalong or beat and we have little clips of stuff we start piecing together," the duo's Guy Chappell said.
"I get a lot of my ideas from movies and try not to stick to a particular genre like other DJs do.
"We pick songs we really like or other people like. "
Last year, Yacht Club DJs were invited by Grammy Award winners Mumford and Sons to join them on the Gentlemen of the Road Stopovers, alongside Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, HAIM, The Walkmen and The Vaccines, playing shows across the US and UK.
Chappell described the experience as 'crazy', performing in front of crowds of up to 85,000 people.
Things don't look to slow down anytime soon for the DJs. Chappell said the pair always focused on making new material.
"We make stuff all the time. I've already got ideas for our next mixtape. While we're on tour we try a lot of the stuff out."
