Ballarat juniors wrap up successful JT Championship - Gallery

THE FIRST Ballarat Regional JT Championship has been a raging success, according to Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre manager Rob Benoit.

Benoit said the tournament, running from April 16-19 at the BRTC, had provided Ballarat district juniors with a prime opportunity to secure national ranking points at a mid level.

Despite recording just one title over the four days a majority of Ballarat juniors posted impressive results.

Number-one seeds James O'Sullivan and Marcus Tilley secured the 12/under boys doubles title and Tilley also finished runner-up in the singles.

Third-seed Emily Tinker finished second in the 12/under girls singles while Tim McConchie finished third in the 14/under boys singles.

"We're really happy with the results of our players and a tournament like this really suits our market," Benoit said.

"In some of the top tournaments we'd have maybe half a dozen (Ballarat players) qualify but we had around 30 playing for national ranking points."

Benoit said the facilities had coped well with the demands of a two-and-a-half hour rain delay.

Doubles was played until late on Thursday and the extra clay courts were used to help maintain play for 160 competing juniors.

"Everyone's saying they'll be back so the problem next year will be trying to fit them all in," Benoit said.
