No such register exists in Ballarat, and a report prepared by council officers suggests the community should be involved in nominating exceptional trees.
“Exceptional trees, both in the private and public realm, are an important and integral community and heritage asset to Ballarat,” wrote city strategy staff.
The proposal is listed in the council agenda to be debated at this week’s meeting.
Some trees were listed as being potentially significant for their age, size and historical value.
If approved, the register will be incorporated into the Ballarat Planning Scheme through a planning scheme amendment.
