Stawell Gift as it happens

HERB HEDEMANN INVITATIONAL

Ringwood's Chris Discombe has streeted the field to win the time-honoured Herb Hedemann Invitational.

Discombe (55m) cruised to victory in the 1600m event, beating Ballarat's Jack Davies (70m) in a time of 3:59.01min.

WOMEN'S GIFT

SEMI FINAL 1

Ballarat's Kate Jones finished fifth in her semi final.

Jones (13.25m) was stung 1m from her handicap after breaking at the start and was no match for winner Kim Geelan (14m).

The winning time was 13.64sec.

SEMI FINAL 2

Ararat teenager Sarah Blizzard (12.5m) ran a controlled race to score an easy win in semi final two.

Blizzard, 17, was a clear winner from Maddie Coates (6.25m) and Anna Pasquali (14.25m) in 13.70sec.

SEMI FINAL 3

Ballarat's Holly Dobbyn (11.5m) stormed into the final with a big win in semi final three.

Dobbyn clocked a time of 13.41sec in beating Katie Moore (8.75m) and Kelly McDonnell (14.25m).

MEN'S GIFT

SEMI FINAL 1

Chris Innes-Wong streamed to a comfortable victory to become the first final qualifier.

Innes-Wong (12.42) was never in any doubt, with Robert Spencer (12.59) and Cam Dunbar (12.61) making up the numbers.

SEMI FINAL 2

The odds have lowered considerably for 2008 winner Sam Jamieson after a superb run off the back mark.

Jamieson posted the fastest qualifying time of 12.21 off a 4.75m mark, beating Simon Jackson (12.28) and Luke Houlihan (12.35).

SEMI FINAL 3

Front marker Luke Versace (12.26) put in a quality run to edge out Edward Ware (12.40) and Matthew Eddy (12.57).

Ballarat veteran Peter O'Dwyer ran solidly to finish middle of the pack.

SEMI FINAL 4

Ryan Camille (12.38) edged out John Adams by just 100th of a second in a race that ended in controversial circumstances.

A review was called of the photo finish that sparked a post match protest, with Adams firmly believing that he had got the win.

Don Scarff finished in third with a time of 12.54.

Adams will become the seventh starter in the final after his post-race protest was upheld.

SEMI FINAL 5

Race favourite Augustine Carty-Cowling (12.36) overcame a slow start to cruise past  Will Johns (12.48) and James Vine (12.64).

SEMI FINAL 6

Isaac Dunmall (12.45) met all the hype with a steady win.

Brendan Matthews (12.68) and Luke Stevens (12.69) took the minor placings.

BILL MCMANUS BACKMARKERS – 400m

Cameron Clayton and Ryan McNamara dead-heated in an action-packed 400m final.

Four runners were separated by the photo, with Jarrad Dartnall third, just ahead of Ballarat's Shane Woodrow.

The winning time was 46.78sec.

LORRAINE DONNAN WOMEN'S HANDICAP – 400m

Celia Cosgriff clocked 52.87sec to claim a narrow victory over Anna Pasquali in the Lorraine Donnan Women’s Handicap (400m).

Tara Domaschenz finished fifth to be Ballarat's best placed runner.

NORTHERN GRAMPIANS SHIRE COUNCIL 800m HANDICAP

Craig Harris (1:51.12) claimed his second Stawell Gift event with a comfortable win over Daniel Reeves (1:51.68) and Daniel Lawlor (1:51.89).

The 41-year-old caught front marker Wayne James about halfway through the second lap and held off a fast finishing Reeves.

JACK DONALDSON HANDICAP - 200m 

Tim Eschebach defeats Luke Houlihan and  Cam Dunbar in a time of 20.53.

CHRIS PERRY MEMORIAL BACKMARKERS INVITATION HANDICAP – 120m

Five-time Paralympic gold medallist Evan O'Hanlon claimed the $10,000 event from 8m, defeating Luke Stevens and Melissa Breen in 12.59sec.

WOMEN'S GIFT FINAL

Ballarat's Holly Dobbyn raced away to win the Stawell Women's Gift, 120m.

Dobbyn clocked 13.30sec to win from fellow teenager Sarah Blizzard and Ballarat runner Kate Jones.

STAWELL GIFT FINAL

Luke Versace has been declared the 2014 Stawell Gift, 120m, champion following a lengthy wait from the judges.

Versace (10m) was eventually crowed the victor from Augustine Carty-Cowling (8.5m) and past winner Sam Jamieson (4.75m) in a photo finish.

Robert Spencer (12.58) cruises across the line ahead of Ben Mispelhorn and Adam Coote.

Dale Lyons defeats Jarrod Castagna and Tom Morehouse in 10.76.
