The Ballarat Gold Swimming Club member claimed sixth in the boys’ 12-13 years’ 100m backstroke final.
Brien qualified for the 10-strong final with the eighth fastest time – one minute, 5.44 seconds.
He then swam 1:5.42 in the final
This bettered his personal best by 2.46 seconds.
Gold went to Leo MacAlister from Carlile in 1:00.42.
Brien also smashed his 200m backstroke personal best by 5.45 seconds.
He produced the 2:22.09 swim in a heat.
This ranked him 12th and less than one second outside a qualifying time for the final.
Brien was one of six Midlands District Swimming Association competitors to qualify for the finals and five to get to the meet.
Michael Rodger from Ballarat Swimming Club also produced a personal best in the boys’ 15 years 200m breaststroke.
He took 0.32 seconds off his previous best.
Danielle Anstis (Ballarat Swimming Club) maintained her qualifying time in the girls’ 15 years 50m freestyle to improve her national ranking by 11 spots.
Maiike Vrij and Hayley Tucker from Ballarat Gold also contested breaststroke events at the nationals.
