The Brain Bee Challenge encourages year 10 students to learn about brain structure and function while dispelling misconceptions about neurological and metal illness.
Ballarat Christian College science teacher Tanya Poole said the students took the challenge above and beyond the curriculum, volunteering to do the study themselves.
She said their research culminated with an online quiz which coincided with Brain Awareness Week last month.
Ballarat Christian College student Mira Stephens, 15, it had been a great opportunity to further her learning in science.
“(The brain) is a lot more complex than I thought,” she said.
The challenge involved 5500 participants from 300 schools in Australia and New Zealand.
The Victorian state final will be held at the Melbourne Brain Centre at the University of Melbourne on June 4.
