More Anzac Day coverage:
About 5000 people lined Sturt Street, between Dawson and Lyons streets, converging on the Cenotaph for the service at 6am.
Hundreds of children attended with their parents, including Deegan Willingham, 10, of Ballarat.
"I come every year with mum and dad to remember the special people who fought in the wars," he said.
"It's worth getting up early for."
For Daniel Williams, 25, it was his first service.
"It was a case of curiosity more than anything," he said.
"The least I could do was get up early to come here and remember the things these men and women did for us.
"My grandfather fought in the second world war... so it's important to me."
The last post rang through the streets about 6.15am before the crowds bowed their heads in silent reflection.
The Ballarat march begins at 10am, leaving from The George Hotel.
