More Anzac Day coverage:
About 200 people attended the Anzac Day service, with several Ballarat dignitaries and school groups laying wreaths at the war memorial.
St Thomas More Primary School's student representative council was one of the groups to pay respect.
Year 6 pupil Ruby Cheesman, 12, said it was an important part of her schooling.
"We learn all about Anzac Day and the wars in school, so to come here and do this we learn even more," she said.
"It's nice to be able to lay a wreath and read all the names on the wall."
Leo Price, 11, came from Melbourne with his family to play the last post.
The first time playing at a commemorative service, Leo said he had been "nervous but excited."
"It's an honour to be able to do it," he said.
Crowds will soon converge on Lydiard Street North, near a The George Hotel, for the traditional Anzac Day march.
