Major Collision Investigation Unit’s Detective Sergeant David Newman said the dead man was a 21-year-old from Wagga Wagga.
The man’s brother was a passenger in the vehicle and was taken to Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital with minor injuries.
The man in the other vehicle, a 21-year-old from Smythesdale, was flown from the scene of the crash to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he is in a serious but stable condition.
Detective Sergeant Newman said they were yet to speak to the Smythesdale man and were calling for any witnesses of the accident to come forward.
