An additional 871 prison beds will be added across the state with $87.5 million specifically listed as creating 203 brand new prison beds at medium term facilities.
Both Beechworth and Langi Kal Kal are specifically mentioned as locations for the new beds, with preliminary works also underway for a further 300 beds at medium term facilities.
However, relocatable shipping container beds are expected to remain at Langi Kal Kal.
Corrections Minister Edward O’Donohue said the investment was a strong commitment to repairing the prison system.
“This is the latest stage in the Coalition government’s efforts to make up for the Labor’s shameful neglect of Victoria’s prison system, while ensuring capacity to account for the vital parole changes that are keeping Victorians safer,” he said.
