Having dominated the first half to take a 26-12 lead into the main break, it appeared as though Ballarat would get its first win of the day on the board, with both the junior netball and football both soundly beaten.
Even at three-quarter time Ballarat held an 11-goal buffer, only for Goulburn Valley to come storming home and actually hit the front, before the visitors squared the ledger in the dying minutes.
The crowd fell silent as the final whistle blew with the scores locked at 39-39.
In two tense overtime halves, it was the GVFL that got some early breathing space, holding a one or two goal buffer for most of the periods.
And in the end it was the home side, buoyed by a vocal crowd, that ran out 49-47 winners.
