Driver dies after two hour ordeal

A MAN reported to be in his early 80s has died after his car crashed into a power pole on the Ballan-Blackwood road yesterday.

The Blackwood resident was flown to the Alfred Hospital in a serious condition after emergency crews worked for two-hours to extricate him from his grey Toyota Camry.

But police have said the man later died in hospital.

Moorabool Highway Patrol Senior Constable Darren Wyka said police were notified by a passer by about the car at 3.15pm.

"The car had gone off the road," Senior Constable Wyka said.

"Emergency services that arrived at the scene were five Victoria police units from Bacchus Marsh, Gordon and Ballan Police.

"SES were also in attendance to cut the car to rescue the man."

The man , Senior Constable Wyka said, suffered leg and pelvic fractures.

"On arrival the man, who had no passengers, was semi-conscious," he said.

"The man was trapped in the car for two hours."

SES Incident controller at the scene said it was one of the toughest extractions of a car crash victim.

The man was rescued at around 5pm.
